Tis the season for hunting and bringing home the bacon, elk or whatever it is you can legally shoot this time of year. People were wondering if it's legal to cut up their big game animal in the field.

According to Wheatland Game Warden David Ellsworth, the answer is yes!

He did warn that there are a few things that a hunter should keep in mind. If you do clean your animal in the field, you should clean up all of the edible portions and take them with you. That would include, but not limited to meat from the hind and front quarters of the animal, as well as the tenderloins and loins.

Ellsworth also reminds hunters that some licenses require the harvesting of a specific gender of animal. A hunter should be mindful of horn and antler point development restrictions or require the harvest of a certain species of deer.

Should you encounter any of these situations, you'll need to have the tail, external sex organs from your animal in your possession as you transport the animal to your processing station.
