Doesn’t anybody celebrate made up holidays anymore? It is a presidential proclamation! TRUE!

The resolution proclaimed the month of July 1984 as "National Ice Cream Month" and the third Sunday of July as "National Ice Cream Day". It was signed into public law by President Ronald Reagan on July 9, 1984 with Presidential Proclamation 5219.

Rumor has it, some purveyors of the frosty delight would like to treat you to some free ice cream. Just none that I could find around Wyoming.

Even though 87% of us have ice cream in our freezer right now, it’s nice to go out and get some fresh and if possible, free ice cream. I was hoping to turn you on to something cool and sweet and…. free! But that is not really happening.

At Coldstone Creamery in Cheyenne and Casper, if you join the eClub, you get a buy one, get one free ice cream coupon. Kids can get a love it or gotta have it signature creation, but that’s not really a National Ice Cream Day celebration now is it?

At Baskin-Robbins, 723 E 16th Street Cheyenne, while not a total freebie, you can get a free waffle cone upgrade when you buy a double scoop ice cream cone all through July. But the reason I include them, is that Baskin Robbins will donate $0.75 from every float sold on July 17 to the United Service Organization or USO, in honor of its 75th anniversary. So there’s that.

Dairy Queen Brazier at 603 N Poplar St and at 3845 E 2nd St, in Casper and Dairy Queen Grill & Chill at 1038 E Pershing Blvd in Cheyenne seem to be ignoring the day of distinction and are only offering a standard sign up for the Blizzard Fan Club and get an ice cream coupon for a buy one, get one free Blizzard. Not really a call to action.

Ben & Jerry’s believes “ice cream tastes best when it’s free!“ and I was hoping their Fort Collins, Colorado shop would like to light up your “orbitofrontal cortex! That’s the part of your brain that rewards you when you make a good decision.” But alas, Ben & Jerry’s will not scoop for nothing.

The woman I talked to at Ben & Jerry’s said to try Walrus Ice Cream at 125 W Mountain Ave, Fort Collins, CO 80524 (if you need to GPS). I was told they are doing a hot fudge sundae for $4 all weekend long in celebration. I would not rack up the miles just for that, but I will be down in Fort Fun this weekend… so I guess it’ll have to do.

Or....

You can always make your own.
