Josh Allen engineered two key fourth quarter drives, and the Wyoming Cowboys rallied to win the Border War 16-13 over Colorado State Saturday night.

This classic rivalry produced a classic game that began with rain showers and finished on a snowy night in Laramie.

Even Cowboys’ head coach Craig Bohl referred to it as an unforgettable game.

Wyoming (6-3, 4-1) won its second straight Border War and kept the Bronze Boot, the traveling trophy between the two schools. The victory also made the Pokes bowl-eligible for a second straight season.

After an Allen fumble gave the Rams possession, the Cowboys defense allowed a first down before they stopped CSU on a fourth and six at the Wyoming 31-yard line.

The Pokes responded with a seven play, 69-yard drive that was capped by Kellen Overstreet’s 3-yard touchdown run. It put UW ahead for the first time in the game with 4:21 left, 16-13.

Allen said they found a way to win.

Colorado State (6-4, 4-2) was forced to punt with 2:38 left after another Wyoming defensive stop. The Cowboys need two first downs and got them. Allen ran for 2 yards on a third down and one play. Then Overstreet ran for seven and five yards on back-to-back carries for the final first down that iced the victory.

Allen accounted for 198 yards of offense. He threw for 138 yards and led UW with 60 yards on the ground. Overstreet added 43 yards rushing, and it all came in the final seven minutes of the game.

Overstreet proved to be an unsung hero in the 109th Border War.

Cooper Rothe added a career-best three field goals of 25, 43 and 32 yards, respectively. Logan Wilson led the Wyoming defense with 14 tackles, 11 of them solo. Youhanna Ghaifan added eight tackles, which included a sack and tackle for loss.

The Rams out-gained the Cowboys 345-to-294 in total offense. They also dominated time of possession with 37:27 compared to 22:33 for UW. Dalyn Dawkins ran for 154 yards, while Nick Stevens added 110 yards passing, but was sacked twice. Izzy Mathews scored a 1-yard touchdown run, and Wyatt Bryan added two field goals.

The Pokes kept their Mountain West title hopes alive, as they chase Boise State in the Mountain Division. Next up is a road game at Air Force next Saturday at 8:15 p.m.
