Stop me if you've heard this one before, but two major media outlets just declared that the Yellowstone super volcano is going to kill us all. (*sigh*)

In our part of Wyoming, we've heard this for years. But, these are no crazy conspiracy websites. There's a brand new editorial by The New York Times. They just published a piece called "A Giant Volcano Could End Human Life on Earth as We Know It". Here's a snippet from their conclusion:

What has happened before can and will happen again, eventually — but because we remain confined to the brief human time horizons of our own experience, we treat them as unreal. In doing so, we leave ourselves vulnerable to what we can’t imagine.

Their point - which I agree is valid - is that we should talk about the possibility of this happening more. Fine. But, the problem is we in Wyoming hear about this so often, it's hard to take the threat seriously.

By the way, it's not just The New York Times. Fox News did a story about this, too.

There is some actual science going on right now that we should pay attention to. As of today, Steamboat Geyser has tied its all-time record for eruptions as KIFI reported. It's erupting about every 4 to 10 days now, so there's no doubt this will be a record year.

Late last year, there was a massive earthquake swarm that Newsweek reported on. Yes, we should pay attention to actual geologic events that are happening.

The problem is there really needs to be some scientific evidence that these events are leading to a potential eruption. Otherwise, many of us that live so close to Yellowstone are less likely to pay attention to the latest conspiracy theory.
