5 Things I Took Away From University of Wyoming Football Media Day
University of Wyoming football is back! The first fall camp practice and annual media day was Monday, July 31 in Laramie.
After having the opportunity to sit in on Coach Bohl's yearly luncheon with the media and interview several athletes and coaches, here are some of my biggest takeaways from day one of Pokes football...
- 1
Comradery
Coach Bohl used the word at his luncheon and must have preached it to his kids on day one, because at least four players I interviewed told me "team comradery" is as good as it's ever been. Safety Andrew Wingard told me "it's light years from the first two years I was here, just the leadership and the brotherhood that's building here is awesome."

Coach Bohl Is Excited
There was an excitement from Coach Bohl that I hadn't seen before Monday. While he cautiously expressed "we have a ton of work to do this fall." He also told me "this will be the best season at Wyoming since I've been here."

Josh Allen Is Confident
Josh is a natural leader, through his actions and vocally. Allen told me he's glad his summer visits with the media are all done so he can "get back to focusing just on football." Coach Bohl told me he thinks the hype around Josh is good "from the standpoint of recruiting and putting our school on the national radar."

New Defensive Coordinator Scottie Hazelton Loves His Kids
And, the kids love their new DC. Hazelton joins the Pokes from the Jacksonville Jaguars where he was an NFL linebackers coach. Previously Hazelton coached at North Dakota State with Coach Bohl. After chatting with the coach I found it hard not to get fired up about football, and I don't even play for him. Andrew Wingard told me "One of the first things he did was take me out to dinner and just asked about me, not even football, he just wanted to build that relationship."

New Stars Will Emerge
In particular at wide receiver. Josh Allen will have up-and-coming weapons C.J. Johnson, Austin Conway, James Price, and John Okwoli to choose from. Keep an eye on tight ends Tyree Mayfield and Josh Harshman, too. Someone in the backfield has the chore of replacing Brian Hill, reps may be split between Kellen Overstreet and Nico Evans.
