I am blown away that Boulder, Colorado is windier than Cheyenne, Wyoming. No Way…

USA Today says CoreLogic has rankings of 293 US cities by total force of severe wind gusts since 2006. The Windy City of Chicago, ranks as the 50th windiest city in the US (not that weather is what Chicago's nickname really references).

The top 5:

  1. Jackson, Miss.: 153 wind events, maximum wind speed 99mph
    2.    Springfield, Mo.: 128 wind events, maximum wind speed 97mph
    3.    Boston, Mass.: 121 wind events, maximum wind speed 83mph
    4.    Cambridge, Mass.: 116 wind events, maximum wind speed 83mph
    5.    Shreveport, La.: 108 wind events, maximum wind speed 77mph

Boulder, Colorado came in at number 9, while Cheyenne didn’t make the list. Then I read that they did not take in to account cities smaller than 100,000. Big difference.

The data that matters (or so I tell myself), is that CoreLogic's rankings differ from NOAA's rankings, which look at average wind speed instead of highest wind gusts. CoreLogic's top 10.

According to NOAA's rankings, Mount Washington, NH is the windiest city in the nation. Cheyenne came 5th while Casper, #7.

Corelogic, go fly a kite.
