Cheyenne firefighters rescued a dog from Sloans Lake on Tuesday morning after the animal had fallen through the ice, according to Fire Cheif Greg Hoggatt.

The chief says the dog's owner called 911 around 10:45 a.m. to report the dog was struggling waters of the lake after having fallen through the ice while chasing geese. Hoggatt says his firefighters were helped by Cheyenne Animal Control, going into the cold waters to rescue the terrified pet.

Chief Hoggatt says the dog's owner, Daniel Ferguson, did the right thing by not trying to rescue the dog himself.

He says the recent cold weather has caused local lakes and ponds to freeze over, but not to the point where people can assume they are safe to walk on
