Cheyenne Urban Forestry Crews Setting Traps For Insect Pests

In conjunction with the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services and Wyoming State Forestry, crews from the city of Cheyenne Urban Forestry Division will be placing Emerald Ash Borer traps in ash trees at several City parks and City-owned properties over the next week.

The traps are green with funnels and a collection cup at the top (see graphic below). They have a non-poisonous chemical that attracts the bugs, while the collection cups have low-toxicity antifreeze and water to preserve any ash borers they capture.

The traps will be hung in the canopies of ash trees.

Cheyenne Mayor Marian Orr is asking people to stay away from the traps and avoid touching any traps that may fall. Instead, please contact Urban Forestry if you see any downed traps.

The emerald ash borer has killed millions of ash trees across the United States.

While it has not yet been found in Cheyenne, it has infested trees in Boulder and Longmont Colorado and is expected to arrive in Cheyenne in the not-to-distant future.
