Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon was joined by state and local law enforcement officials and medical personnel on Monday in announcing the "Click it or Ticket" May Mobilization event.

The local and state enforcement effort aimed at getting people to wear their seatbelts. The special enforcement effort is held from May 13 through June 2,  locally, statewide and nationally. Law enforcement will be cracking down on motorists who fail to buckle up.

According to information presented Monday morning at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, seat belt usage saved roughly 14,955 lives of people age five and above across the United States in 2017. In Wyoming, roughly half of the 60 people who had died on state highways as of Friday were not wearing seatbelts.

Two more people died over the weekend in Wyoming. Whether they were wearing seatbelts was not immediately known.

Wyoming law requires people to wear seat belts while driving or riding in a vehicle anywhere in the state. But the violation is a secondary offense, meaning people can only be ticketed for not wearing a seat belt if they are stopped first for another offense, such as speeding.
