Cowboys Beat Spartans on Senior Day
Jason McManamen and Morris Marshall went out on a high note, as the Wyoming Cowboys beat San Jose State 74-62 Saturday afternoon in Laramie.
Wyoming (18-13, 8-10) took advantage of 21 Spartans turnovers. They also had five players in double figures. Justin James led the Cowboys with 15 points. Alan Herndon scored 13 points, while Hayden Dalton contributed 11. Cody Kelley and Jeremy Lieberman added 10 points apiece.
In a release from the University of Wyoming, head coach Allen Edwards said,
“One of the things we talked to our guys about entering this game was looking at today as the start of the Mountain West Conference Tournament. This game was a must win in terms of positioning ourselves for the tournament either as the seven seed, with a win, or the nine seed.”
Neither team led by more than six points most of the game. The game featured 11 lead changes and was tied seven times.
James knocked down a pair of free throws that put UW ahead 63-55 with 3:15 left. Back-to-back three-pointers from Kelley and Dalton with just over a minute left iced it.
The Cowboys shot 50 percent in the game and knocked down 11-of-21 from deep. Wyoming scored 22 points off the Spartans turnovers.
San Jose State (14-15, 7-11) shot 44 percent for the game. Brandon Clarke led the way with 20 points and nine rebounds. Ryan Welage added 19 points.
The Pokes will be the seventh seed and open play Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. against Air Force at the Mountain West Championships.
