A pair of 38-4 victories showed how dominant the Wyoming Cowboys wrestling team can be, as they closed out their home schedule last weekend.

The No. 17 Cowboys blew away No. 25 Utah Valley on Friday night before a standing room only crowd of 805 people in the Uni-Wyo Sports Complex. They followed that up with another blowout, this one of Northern Colorado on Senior Night in the Arena-Auditorium Saturday night. That was attended by 1,753 spectators.

Friday’s dual against the Wolverines opened at 141 pounds. Senior Bryce Meredith recorded a pin in the second period and earned his 100th career dual victory.

That was followed by Sam Turner’s pin at 149, Archie Colgan’s tech fall at 157 and a forfeit win for Branson Ashworth at 165 pounds. That made it 23-0. Utah Valley’s only victory was a 174. Wyoming concluded the dual with five straight wins by decision, which included some upsets at 184, 197 and 285 (heavyweight).

Saturday was more of the same for the Pokes. The dual began at 197 pounds, where Luke Paine won by injury default. Sam Eagan followed at heavyweight with a hard-fought 6-3 decision. Drake Foster pinned his opponent in the third period for a quick 15-0 lead.

Northern Colorado won at 133, when UW senior Ronnie Stevens lost by major decision 11-2. The Cowboys quickly bounced back into the win column, as Meredith finished his home career in style:

After a tech fall by Turner at 149, Wyoming won the last four matches by decision. That featured an upset by senior Chaz Polson at 184 pounds, 5-1. He referenced it in the post-game interview as his first win ever over his opponent, UNC’s 20th-ranked Dylan Gabel.

Coach Mark Branch was also pleased with the dominating performance on Saturday night.

The Cowboys will conclude the regular season with a Big 12 dual at Air Force Friday night at 7 p.m.
