All 46 schools in western Colorado will be closed Thursday and Friday due to an unprecedented outbreak of an unknown virus.

The Mesa Country Valley School District will be closed throughout the entire Thanksgiving break and plan to reopen after the holiday.

In a news release, the district nursing coordinator Tanya Marvin said this:

“We are taking this highly unusual action because this virus is extremely contagious and spreading quickly across our schools. In addition, it appears that there is now a second, related virus that is affecting students, some of whom have already been ill in recent weeks. The combination of the two has created an unprecedented spread of illness."

The district says that during the holiday break custodial crews will work diligently to disinfect the schools.

The Mesa County Valley School District is the largest school district between Salt Lake City and Denver serving more than 22,000 students.
