LARAMIE -- Tashaun Gipson competed in his first career Super Bowl on Sunday night. The 12-year National Football League veteran started at safety for the San Francisco 49ers.

Gipson represented the first former University of Wyoming football player to compete in a Super Bowl since linebacker Logan Wilson did for the Cincinnati Bengals two seasons ago against the Los Angeles Rams.

Unfortunately for the two former Pokes, neither brought home a title.

Tashaun Gipson, San Francisco 49ers

Gipson made his presence felt in the 49ers’ 25-22 overtime loss to the back-to-back Super Bowl champion, Kansas City Chiefs. The former Wyoming cornerback made five tackles.

That gave Gipson 74 tackles for the season, three tackles for loss, one interception, three passes defended and one quarterback hit. He started every game of consequence this season, only missing the regular-season finale, which had no bearing on San Francisco’s playoff positioning.

Jacob Hollister still stands as the last former Wyoming student-athlete to win a Super Bowl. He did so with the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII when they defeated the Rams, 13-3.

Gipson could have been the 13th former Cowboy to hoist the Lombardi Trophy, joining Joe Ramunno (Chicago Bears), Jerry Hill (Baltimore Colts), Mark Smolinski (New York Jets), Aaron Kyle (Dallas Cowboys), Jim Kiick (Miami Dolphins), Jay Novacek (Dallas Cowboys), Derrick Martin (New York Giants, Baltimore Ravens), Hollister (New England Patriots), Joe Williams (Dallas Cowboys), Tony McGee (Washington Redskins), Pat Ogrin (Washington Redskins) and Jack Weil (Washington Redskins).

University of Wyoming’s Top 50 Football Players

During the summer of 2021, 7220Sports.com counted down the Top 50 football players in University of Wyoming history, presented by Premier Bone & Joint Centers, Worthy of Wyoming.

The rules are simple: What was the player's impact while in Laramie? That means NFL stats, draft status or any other accolade earned outside of UW is irrelevant when it comes to this list.

This isn't a one-man job. This task called for a panel of experts. Joining 7220's Cody Tucker are Robert GagliardiJared NewlandRyan Thorburn, and Kevin McKinney.

We all compiled our own list of 50 and let computer averages do the work. Think BCS -- only we hope this catalog is fairer.
