SAN JOSE, Calif., -- The last time this Wyoming program won a game in this state came all the way back in 2014.

That was Craig Bohl's first season on the sidelines.

The Cowboys, losers of four straight, rolled into Fresno State and blasted the eventual West Division champions 45-17 behind a record-breaking performance from a freshman running back. Brian Hill made it look all-too easy, rushing for 281 yards and two touchdowns in that road rout. The program's all-time leading rusher also led all pass catchers with 106 yards on three grabs.

Since that stunner, Wyoming has dropped eight straight in California. That fact wasn't lost on this team Friday night, following a gutty 16-13 overtime victory over San Jose State inside CEFCU Stadium, a venue the Cowboys haven't won in since 1996.

"This is our first win in California in the 21st century," safety Brooklyn Cheek, an Oakdale native, said postgame.

While that's not accurate, it's certainly felt that way.

"I can't wait to get on a plane and actually be a little happy," the sophomore added.

The Cowboys Friday also snapped an eight-game skid away from home. The last time this bunch received celebratory ice cream on the ride home was last August after a 10-0 win over Akron in the season opener.

It's been ugly ever since. The average margin in these setbacks has been 17 points.

That's all a distant memory now.

"It's awesome," said tight end Jake Wilson, who hauled in an 8-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter, the first in his young career. "I'm so glad for this coaching staff, for this fan base, for Tyler (Hughes), for everybody, because of how hard they've worked."

This outing had all the makings of another road disaster, from being stuffed at the goal line to throwing a red-zone interception to giving up six sacks, including three inside the Spartans' 20-yard line. There were also untimely penalties and a costly fumble.

That was all but forgotten, for some, when Erik Sandvik booted through the game-winner in overtime from 21 yards out.

Wyoming fans from around the globe sounded off on the World Wide Web as the Cowboys bumbled and stumbled through most of this sloppy tilt in the Bay Area.
