A few months ago, we announced that Ty Larsen, a former Wyoming all-state football and basketball star who attended Eastern Wyoming College and has coached at several high-level basketball programs, was taking over the Casper College Men's Basketball Team.

It's rare that a new coach and nearly an entirely new team start clicking as quickly as the T-Birds have. Last week, the team traveled to Las Vegas for two exhibition games against the College of Southern Nevada and San Jose City College and left with two solid wins. Again, it's impressive how they came together.

Coach Larsen has worked with great coaches who have shaped his coaching and leadership style. One of those coaches is the legendary Bobby Hurley, who was not only a great coach for teams like Arizona State and the University of Buffalo, but also an outstanding all-American collegiate player at Duke, and he'll be coming to Casper to share his remarkable story.

From 1990–93, he led the Blue Devils to three Final Four appearances and back-to-back NCAA National Championships in 1991 and 1992. He was named the 1992 Final Four Most Outstanding Player, earned two All-America selections, and finished his career as the NCAA’s all-time assists leader with 1,076 assists.

Hurley was also part of the extraordinary basketball moment surrounding the 1992 U.S. Olympic “Dream Team.” As an elite college player, he was selected for the U.S. collegiate team that scrimmaged against a legendary group of NBA stars—including Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Charles Barkley—before the Barcelona Olympics. The college team famously defeated the Dream Team in one scrimmage, giving Hurley a firsthand look at one of basketball’s most legendary chapters. This moment in history is captured in the HBO Documentary, “We Beat the Dream Team.”

After college, he spent a few years in the NBA before moving into coaching.

Wyoming Mountaineers of Casper College Archival Collection

This collection was found unprocessed but was pieced together in stages over the course of a year, starting with the scrapbook and photo albums created by the WMCC. These items were found first and so were arranged and described at the collection level, and then as processing continued, the climbing vest and pitons were found, followed by various documents and articles written and published on the Mountaineers, all of which brought the collection together.

Highlights of the collection are the artifacts and documentation of the First Graduation Climb on Devils Tower in 1955, the 1956 Rappel off the side of the Casper Gladstone Hotel, and the climbs during the 50th Anniversary of Devils Tower. Documentation on the latter includes a feature in LIFE Magazine.
