Are you the type of person who wants to get every bit in the tank when pumping gas? When the automatic shutoff clicks, you pull the handle to put a little more in, or you want your total rounded up to the next dollar.

The problem, though, is that you could be damaging your vehicle doing that.

The Instagram account The Car Care Couple points out that a little extra fuel in your tank could be a BIG issue.

Whatever reason you’re using for topping it off—like you want to round up or to get more miles out of a tank of gas, it’s not worth risking an expensive repair or replacing a part.🚙

The gas pump will automatically stop when sensors indicate the car’s tank is full. There will be extra space in the tank, but that’s to allow room for expansion of the gas. ⛽️

Adding more gas can overwhelm the evaporative system and cause a leak.

Car Parts.com describes your vehicle's EVAP System as preventing gasoline fumes from leaking into the atmosphere. It uses a charcoal canister to hold the fumes until your car starts.

If you overfill your gas tank, it could cause the vapor intake hole with gas and get sucked into the charcoal canister. If this happens, it could damage your EVAP System and cost you hundreds of dollars to repair.

Not only could the repair bill be significant, but you're wasting fuel, and fuel is money.
