The thought of a wildfire breaking out is terrifying. All it takes is one lightning strike, and your world can be turned upside down.

Over the last few years, Wyoming has been hit pretty hard by fires. That Elk Fire, House Draw Fire, and Remington Fire all hit the Cowboy State in 2024. These fires burned hundreds of thousands of acres across the state.

2025 is shaping up to be another big fire year.

The Red Canyon Fire is already nearing 110,000 acres in Hot Springs County and inching closer to Fremont County. A fire of this magnitude is devastating to many people and animals.

Ranchers, farmers, families, outfitters, elk, deer, antelope, sheep, and cows are all being affected. Keeping yourself and those around you safe is tough in a fire situation like the ones we've been experiencing.

One way you can get information about the fires, fire safety, and alerts is to download the Watch Duty app. This app is a great tool to have in your safety toolbox, but it's not the only thing you'll need to keep your family safe.

Always remember that getting the information from the source is the best practice. Apps will draw information from all over the internet and could be pretty vague.

Again, a single flash of lightning, a single spark, or a single hot car is all it takes to start a fire, and we all need to be ready if a fire breaks out.

  • Have safety/ emergency supplies together.
    • Gather food, water, and medicine to have on hand.

  • Prepare your home/ property for fire.
  • Download the Watch Duty App.
