Start Planning Now For Another Insanely Wild Wyoming Winter

If the winter of 2022-2023 reminded us of anything, it was to always be ready for the worst. It was a brutally cold and snowy winter for many parts of the state.

The snow began on January 1st and felt like it didn't stop until May. Places like Casper Riverton, Buffalo, Midwest and Afton all had record setting snow totals. There were numerous winter storm and blizzard warnings issued all over the state and snow didn't fully melt in some areas until mid-summer.

There are always those hardcore Wyomingites that say, "It's winter in Wyoming, deal with it", and even they were over the snow and cold by the time summer got here.

I'm not sure we're quite ready for the winter weather and we may be few weeks, or even months, away from that first major snow, but last winter was a great reminder of how important it is to be prepared with the supplies you're going to need for you and your family safe & comfortable.

You've probably heard the motto "always be prepared", and those are good words to live by, especially when it comes to a Wyoming winter.

The Natrona County Emergency Management team has given a recommended list of items you should have on-hand at the house during the winter. Most on the list aren't a surprise, but they are extremely important to have and if you start acquiring them now, you can slowly stock up.

You know your needs and supply list for your home, but these are reminders of other important things you need to have.

-Flashlight and extra batteries
-Battery-powered NOAA Weather Radio and portable radio to receive emergency information
-Extra food and water such as dried fruit, nuts, granola bars and other food requiring no cooking or refrigeration.
-Extra prescription medicine
-Baby items such as diapers and formula
-First-aid supplies
-Heating fuel: refuel before you are empty; fuel carriers may not reach you for days after a winter storm
-Emergency heat source: fireplace, wood stove or space heater properly ventilated to prevent a fire
-Fire extinguisher, smoke alarm; test smoke alarms monthly to ensure they work properly
-Extra pet food and warm shelter for pets
-Review generator safety: Never run a generator in an enclosed space
-Make sure your carbon monoxide detector is working correctly and that the outside vent is clear of leaves and debris. During or after the storm, make sure it is cleared of snow.
Home fires are common each winter when trying to stay warm.
