“The 85th Anniversary is shaping up with amazing music! It’ll be good times, loud tunes and spending time together rocking out to Stone Temple Pilots, Nickelback, Five Finger Death Punch, and so many others!” ~ Sturgis Buffalo Chip CEO Rod Woodruff.

Spread across eight locations, including local bars, campgrounds, and indoor/outdoor stages, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally regularly lures approximately 500,000 to a million people to South Dakota every year. Reports show the occasion also brings around $800 million in revenue to the area.

With three-quarters of a century of history and millions of attendees, who started it all?

The founder is generally considered to be Clarence "Pappy" Hoel. He purchased an Indian Motorcycle franchise in Sturgis in 1936 and formed the "Jackpine Gypsies" that same year.

The first rally was held on August 14, 1938, by the "Jackpine Gypsies" motorcycle club, who still own and operate the tracks, hill climb, and field areas where the rally is centered.

The first event was called the "Black Hills Classic" and consisted of a single race with nine participants and a small audience. The focus of the motorcycle rally was originally racing and stunts.

The event has grown to be one of the largest motorcycle rallies in the world.

Enjoy some of my favorite moments from several years at the Rally!

From Blockbusters to Hidden Gems: 35 Movies That Take Place in South Dakota

When it comes to South Dakota and Hollywood, we've seen our fair share of films that have used our state as the backdrop for a number of productions over the years. They may not have always filmed here, but movie folk love to set stories here.

We're all familiar with the blockbusters like 1990's Dances With Wolves, 1959's North By Northwest, and more recently, 2007's National Treasure: Book of Secrets. But our state's life on the big screen goes back nearly 100 years.

According to IMDb, it all started with Courtin' Wildcats, a 1929 film which, like so many of the 29 films on this list, is a Western set in the time before South Dakota became a state in 1889.
