Homes purchased from the Sears catalog were mail-order kit houses, not pre-assembled buildings, sold from 1908 to 1940 by Sears, Roebuck, and Co.
Customers selected a design, received a kit with pre-cut lumber and other materials, and assembled the home using detailed instructions.
Over 70,000 such homes were sold across North America, providing affordable, modern housing with conveniences like indoor plumbing and electricity for the growing middle class.
Imagine your house arriving, assembly required.
That included door knobs, windows, even sinks, toilets, and bathtubs. Let's not forget wiring and light fixtures.
Everything was pre-cut and pre-drilled. All the owner needed to do was follow the instructions and put it together.
Most of these homes were sold in the West and Midwest.
It usually took about 90 days' worth of work to assemble them, depending on the size of the home.
Today, we have factory-built modular homes that arrive by truck and are ready to go. They don't look as nice, but they are cheaper.
