The Largest & Most Complete Woolly Mammoth Is At Casper College

There was a time when massive, fuzzy, elephants roamed Wyoming.

Sounds cute doesn't it?

The largest and most complete specimen is located in Casper, Wyoming.

They have an upcoming open house where you can come see it for free.

Mammoths made their way to the North American continent about 1.8 million years ago and died out about 13,000 years ago.

At one time they roamed northern Russia and were able to move into North America during the last ice age, when a bridge was created between Russia and Alaska.

But since the climate never stops changing, and these creatures could not adapt, they eventually died out.

Humans were around at the time and they also led to the die-off as they hunted the Wolly Mammoth for food, their hyde, and other resources that they could take from the large creatures.

Today we are still digging up mammoth bones.

You can get an idea of the impressive size of these beasts at Casper College in Casper Wyoming.

Mammoth Day comes to the Tate Geological Museum on Saturday, March 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Come see the full-size mammoth they call Dee.

Dee is the world’s largest and most complete mounted Columbian mammoth.

You can hear two presentations of how Dee was discovered, excavated, and then put back together.

There is a difference between mammoths and elephants, besides their size and being so cute and fuzzy. You'll learn about those differences too.

Children 12 and under will receive a free mammoth book and poster while supplies last.

The event is free and open to the public.
