Cheyenne Gets State Money To Plant Over 100 Trees In Parks

Cheyenne has gotten a state grant to plant over 100 trees in Holliday Park and Lakeview Cemetary, according to a news release from the city.

The $55,000 grant is through the Wyoming State Forestry Division to help the city's urban tree canopy.

Cheyenne has been removing aging cottonwood trees from city parks because officials say they are nearing the end of their natural life span. Dozens of the trees have been removed over the last couple of years.

The City Plans to Plant A Mixture Of Trees

The new trees will include a variety of deciduous and evergreen trees, and a total of 110 trees are expected to be planted. The release says Urban Forestry tried to pick a mixture of trees that will diversify the city's tree population and reduce the effects of aging and disease

“We’re committed to keeping trees in our urban environment,” City Forester Mark Ellison said. “Trees planted with this grant funding will add to our efforts to not only replace trees we have needed to remove due to disease and old age but also to plant more trees in the city than we had before.”

Rooted in Cheyenne is planning to add around 300 trees through its program this year as well.
