Cheyenne Transient Charged for Firing Gun, Running From Officers
A 45-year-old Cheyenne transient has been charged in connection with Tuesday's gun incident in north central Cheyenne which forced a secure perimeter at an elementary school.
Police spokeswoman Alex Farkas says it all started around 2:15 p.m. after Andy Lee Kirkendall reportedly entered the American Legion Post 6 located at 2001 E. Lincolnway and pointed a firearm at a security camera.
Farkas says a citizen at the scene notified a responding officer that Kirkendall was sitting near the intersection of Big Horn Avenue and East 13th Street.
"As the officer approached, Kirkendall fired the gun and ran away, initiating a foot pursuit," said Farkas.
"Out of an abundance of caution, Alta Vista Elementary School was placed into a secure perimeter," Farkas added.
Farkas says Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers joined in the chase and assisted with following Kirkendall to the intersection of East 15th Street and Bradley Avenue.
"Kirkendall continued to ignore officer commands to stop, a Taser was deployed, and he was taken into custody without further incident (and) the firearm was recovered," she said.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
On Wednesday, the Laramie County District Attorney's Office charged Kirkendall with felon in possession of a firearm, reckless endangering, misdemeanor possession of methamphetamine, and interference with a peace officer.
He's scheduled to make his initial appearance in Laramie County Circuit Court tomorrow, Sept. 7, at 2 p.m.
