As the Cheyenne Family YMCA prepares to close for what may be the last time on Friday, Sept. 26, the organization has sent out an email thanking members of the Cheyenne Y for their support.

YMCA Official: We Can't Say What The Future Looks Like

Pat Murray of the YMCA of Northern Colorado opened by saying "We cannot say what the future looks like for this building or for the community that has flourished within its walls."

He went on to write "What we can say is thank you. Thank you for being a part of the Y. Thank you for your smiles, your laughs, for the stories, the resilience and the loyalty. While the news has focused on our lack of membership, we want to thank you for recognizing just how special this place has been. We have loved serving you. We have loved being a part of your life and making your everyday just a little better. Our staff have loved seeing you learn and grow, get stronger, overcome challenges and build friendships."

Murray went on to thank specific staffers and the staff in general. He then closed by seemingly holding out the possibility of the facility reopening: "We appreciate all the kind words, support and efforts to keep the Y open. We will reach out to you if anything changes.."

The Cheyenne Y is slated to close "indefinitely" today [Sept. 26] at 6 p.m. The facility first opened in 1958.

YMCA of Northern Colorado CEO Chris Coker recently told Townsquare Media that the Cheyenne Y would have needed about 1,000 new memberships to remain open, with both individual and family memberships counting as one membership. Coker says the current membership count is in the 800 range.

Mayor Says City Offering Kids In Y Programs A Slot In City Programs

Cheyenne Mayor Patrick Collins also wrote about the Y closing in his "Mayor's Minute" column on Friday ."The recent announcement that the YMCA is closing on the 26th has left many kids and families needing support. Justin Pendelton from the Boys & Girls Club has shared with me how they have prioritized getting kids served by the Y into their program. I love their dedication to serving kids in our community. Jason Sanchez leads our Community Recreation & Events department. We have reopened our current sport leagues to give kids in Y programs a chance to get into city programs. It has stressed the B&G Club and our city programs for space and resources, but it is the right thing to do. We do need coaches and sponsors to keep these programs growing."
