Cheyenne Man Accused of Threatening to Kill Mom With Sledgehammer

A 21-year-old Cheyenne man is facing a felony charge after allegedly threatening to kill his mother with a sledgehammer.

According to a booking sheet, police were dispatched to a home in Cheyenne at about 5:42 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23 for a reported family disturbance.

Police say while they were en route, dispatch advised the male suspect was outside with a sledgehammer smashing concrete.

Police arrived and contacted Luke Jay Baker, who was outside.

Baker reportedly told police that he was upset with his mother, and said in the past he was physical with her and threw a soda bottle in her direction.

Police say Baker admitted to smashing items inside the home with the sledgehammer but didn't remember what happened afterward because he "blacked out."

Baker's mother reportedly told police that Baker grabbed a sledgehammer from his room and began smashing the walls.

Baker then reportedly struck a metal lantern on the coffee table with the sledgehammer, causing the lantern to hit the wall, shatter, and strike her.

Baker also reportedly threatened to kill her with the sledgehammer.

Cheyenne Man Charged Following Alleged Sledgehammer Smashing Spree

Baker was arrested and booked into the Laramie County Detention Center, and later charged with aggravated assault and battery - threatens to use a drawn deadly weapon, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison, misdemeanor reckless endangering, and misdemeanor property destruction.

Baker made his initial appearance in Laramie County Circuit Court on Tuesday, Aug. 27, during which his bond was set at $2,000 cash and his preliminary hearing was scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 3:30 p.m.
