The USPS posted the following announcement on its website:

President Joseph R. Biden has declared Jan. 9, 2025 as a national day of mourning, calling on Americans to remember the vast contributions of former President Jimmy Carter.

To honor the life and legacy of President Carter, the Postal Service will observe the national day of mourning.

  • All Post Office locations will be closed.
  • Regular mail will not be delivered.
  • Package delivery will be limited.

Carter had served a single term as Governor Of Georgia when he announced he was running for president in December of 1974. At the time he was little-known outside of his home state and few national political pundits gave him much chance of being elected.

But he scored an upset win in the Iowa Caucuses--which at the time were largely ignored by most presidential candidates--and then won the 1976 New Hampshire Primary. He used the momentum from those victories to garner national attention (and politcal contributions) and ended up winning the Democratic Nomination.

Carter then defeated incumbent Republican Gerald R. Ford in a close race in the 1976 General Election.

Carter was defeated in his fre-election bid by Former Calfifornia Governor Ronald Reagan in 1980.
