One of the top commentators on University of Wyoming Football expects the 2025 Cowboys to take a big step forward in 2025.

The Cowboys open their season against the Akron Zips on the road next Thursday, August 28. You can see the entire Cowboy Football schedule here.

Cody Tucker is a lifelong Cowboy football fan. He covers the team on day-to-day basis, conducting interviews with players and coaches, covering practices, tracking injuries and emerging players and just about anything having to do with Cowboy football for his website, 7220 sports

And he thinks the 2025 Cowboys are going to be better than many people think.

Tucker admits that it shouldn't be hard to top last season's 3-9 overall record, although he adds the pokes were ''points away from being a seven win team."

What went right for the 2025 Cowboys was how the season finished, with a 15-14 upset of a Washington State team that went 8-4 and played in the Holiday Bowl.

Not only was the pokes season-ending victory a road win in Pullman, Washington, but they did it without quarterback Kaden Anderson, who took the role of starting quarterback late in the season, accumulating a passer rating of 136.7.

He clearly gave the Wyoming offense a spark in 2024, including a near-upset of nationally-ranked Boise State in the next to last game of the season.

Expect A Quicker. More Explosive Offense

Kaden Anderson is back in 2025.Tucker says he will have the advantage of throwing to probably the best group of receivers since at least the days of Josh Allen. '"They've got some talent out there for the first time in a long time," says Tucker.

Of the offense in general compared to past years, Tucker says "It's much different. It's quicker." That's driven in large part by a talented and deep receiving corps coached by Cowboys legend Jovan Bouknight who takes over as the wide receivers coach. Combine that with having Anderson firmly entrenched as the team's starter should generate a more explosive passing game and offense in general than Cowboy fans are used to seeing in recent years.

A Lot Of New Faces On Defense Need To Step Up

While the pokes defense features a lot of new faces, there should be improvement there as well, including a bigger defensive line that should be better against the run.

Tucker says  the pass rush may be the key to the defense, since the secondary will feature a lot of new players, especially at safety. He says the pokes had 'no semblance of a pass rush in 2024.'' This year they need to "put the quarterback on his wallet."

All in all the 2025 pokes should be a significantly better squad as Head Coach Jay Sawvel enters heads into his second season at the helm.

How much better? Tucker says he would be comfortable predicting seven wins, adding the season opener on August 28 at Akron will be crucial to the success of the season.

For what it's worth, oddsmakers as of August 22 had the pokes favored by about 7.5 points.
