Maxfield: You Must Give Employees Time Off To Vote

Wyoming Secretary of State Max Maxfield says employers are required by state statute to give employees one hour off to vote on primary election day August 21st. Employers face a misdemeanor charge and a fine up to $1,000 if they are found in violation of the law. The law does not apply to employees with three or more consecutive non-working hours during the time when the polls are open. There are also some exceptions for federal agencies. The hour off cannot be during the employees meal hour and can be selected at the convenience of the employer. The employee must use the hour to vote. The polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on August 21st.
