The arrival of Coronavirus (COVID-19) has certainly forced most of us to seriously alter how we live our lives in both big and small ways.

Things that have been second nature for so long are now under increased scrutiny and some of those habits may never come back when we emerge on the other side of this pandemic.

Handshakes date all the way back to fifth-century Greece and continue to be a customary way of greeting friends, family, and acquaintances.

But with 'social distancing' now the norm, the handshake has essentially become extinct and apparently a lot of us would like to see it stay that way going forward.

In a recent Business Insider/Survey Monkey poll of more than 1,000 Americans, more than half (54%) said the traditional handshake should be replaced by an 'alternative greeting'. Only 11 percent said they believe handshakes should stay.

So what should take over for the handshake? Here's what the survey said:

  • A wave (22%)
  • Verbal greeting (15%)
  • A nod (14%)
  • A bow (8%)
