San Jose State heading to High Plains for Saturday showdown

LARAMIE -- The Wyoming Cowboys will host the San Jose State Spartans Saturday in a conference match-up that will pit two of the top teams in the Mountain West this season.
Wyoming will enter Saturday’s game with a 3-2 overall record and a 1-0 record in the Mountain West. San Jose State will bring a 2-1 overall record into Saturday’s game. It will be the Spartans’ first conference game of the season.
Pokes Look to Continue Home Winning Streak
Wyoming has won each of its first three home games this season. The 2022 home schedule began with a 40-37 win in double overtime over Tulsa, followed by a 33-10 home victory over Northern Colorado and a big 17-14 home win over Air Force to begin Mountain West Conference play.

Down to the Wire -- Wyoming-San Jose Series Has Seen a String of Close Finishes
In the 12 previous meetings between Wyoming and San Jose State, five of those 12 meetings have been decided by one possession or else. Four of those close finishes have come in the last five meetings, beginning in 2013. Wyoming holds a 7-5 advantage in the series and a 3-2 advantage in games played in Laramie. Series Part II -- Close Games Versus Larger Margins of Victory
An oddity in the games played between Wyoming and San Jose State shows that all seven games decided by more than one possession have been won by Wyoming. All five games decided by one possession or less have been won by San Jose State.
Starting Fast
Starting games fast has become a trademark for the Wyoming offense the last four weeks of this season. The Cowboys scored on their first possession of the game against BYU on Sept. 24, marking the fourth consecutive game Wyoming scored on its opening offensive possession of a game.

Against BYU, the Pokes went 57 yards in 10 plays and took 3:55 off the clock to take a 3-0 lead on a 28-yard field goal by John Hoyland. UW scored on a 13-play, 67-yard drive that took 8:08 off the clock against Tulsa, resulting in a 25-yard Hoyland field goal. Versus Northern Colorado, Wyoming went 56 yards in 11 plays in 6:24 and Hoyland kicked a 23-yard field goal. Against Air Force, the Pokes drove 73 yards in 15 plays that took 7:32 and Hoyland made a 20-yard field goal.
Red-Zone Success
One of the areas Wyoming has been very successful in this season is scoring once reaching the red-zone (inside an opponent’s 20-yard line). The Cowboys have scored on 15 of 16 (93.8 percent) opportunities inside their opponents’ red zone.
UW has scored seven touchdowns and eight field goals on its trips into the red zone in the 2022 season. The Pokes rank No. 2 in the Mountain West Conference and No. 27 in the nation in red-zone offense.
Playing Disciplined
As has been the case during the Craig Bohl era at Wyoming, the Cowboys are once again one of the most disciplined and least penalized teams in the country. Wyoming is No. 2 in the Mountain West Conference and No. 13 among all Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams in fewest penalties per game (4.40 penalties per game). The Pokes are also No. 2 in the MW and No. 16 in the FBS in fewest penalty yards per game (38.40 yards per game).
Cole Godbout Closing in on Wyoming Top 10 in Career Tackles for Loss
Wyoming’s junior nose tackle Cole Godbout has been a standout for the Pokes the last four seasons. From the 2019 season through this season, Godbout has appeared in 36 games and started 28.
With 2.5 tackles for loss at BYU on Sept. 24, Godbout has improved his career total in tackles for loss to 21.5. With his next tackle for loss, Godbout will tie former Cowboy great Gabe Knapton for 10th place.
As a sophomore in 2021, Godbout was named by Pro Football Focus (PFF) to its Second Team All-Mountain West Conference team. Mountain West head coaches and media voted him an Honorable Mention selection to the official MW All-Conference team.

Titus Swen Goes Over 1,500-Yard Mark for His Career
With his 78 rushing yards at BYU on Sept. 24, Wyoming running back Titus Swen exceeded 1,500 rushing yards for his career. He enters this week with 1,528 career rushing yards.
Swen has improved every season he has played as a Cowboy. He averaged 43.6 rushing yards per game as a true freshman in 2019. He did not play during the COVID-shortened season of 2020, but came back strong in 2021 to average 60.4 rushing yards per game and rush for a career high 785 yards.
For the 2022 season, Swen is averaging 78.8 rushing yards per game and has rushed for 394 total yards. At his current pace, Swen could record his first 1,000-yard rushing season in 2022.
About the San Jose State Spartans
San Jose State enters this week with a 2-1 overall record. SJSU has won its two home games this season over Portland State (21-17) and Western Michigan (34-6). The Spartans lost their lone road game thus far this year at Auburn (24-16).
Quarterback Chevan Cordeiro leads the San Jose State offense. Cordeiro transferred to SJSU this offseason from fellow Mountain West member school Hawai’i. Cordeiro passed for 323 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 86 yards and one TD in leading Hawai’i to a win over Wyoming in Laramie last season.
The Spartan defense is led by defensive lineman Cade Hall, who was the 2020 MW Defensive Player of the Year and was selected the 2022 Preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year by conference media members.

Next Up
After Saturday’s game versus San Jose State, Wyoming will travel to Albuquerque, N.M. to face the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday, Oct. 8. That game will kick off at 5:00 p.m., M.T., from University Stadium in Albuquerque and will be televised by CBS Sports Network.
