The Director of Wyoming Equality says people should not trivialize an incident this week at McCormick Jr. High School in Cheyenne in which flyers targeting black and LGBTQ people were distributed.

Sara Burlingame says trivializing such incidents can lead to mass killings and terrorist acts, such as the recent murder of 49 Muslims in New Zealand. On the other hand, Burlingame, who is also a member of the Wyoming House of Representatives, said her organization is more interested in using the incident as a teaching moment than in punishing students at the school.

She says any McCormick students who were involved in distributing the flyers learned such hatred from adults.

She also said a rally in response to the incident is slated for Friday, March 29 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Cheyenne. Burlingame sat down with Townsquare Media's Doug Randall on Thursday morning to discuss the flyers and what she feels we can learn from the incident.
