God willing, the oldest athlete in the Cowboy State will return to Laramie in August to defend his medal at the Wyoming Senior Olympics.

One month shy of his 92nd birthday, Joe Chasteen was the only male contestant in the 90 - 94 age group at the Senior Olympics last year, competing in bowling. Chasteen, who hails from the tiny town of Uva, was also a member of the Wyoming House of Representatives in the 1970s.

Another standout, 92-year-old Helena, Montana, native Charlotte Sanddal is the "Michael Phelps of senior swimming". Last year, Sanddal won 10 gold medals at the Wyoming Senior Olympics.

87-year-old Ronald "Leo" Sprinkle also ranks among the best elderly athletes in the region. The former University of Wyoming professor and noted UFO researcher has been a fixture at the Senior Olympics for many years. In 2016, Sprinkle won five medals in basketball and swimming.
