A spokesman for the Cheyenne Police Department says a surprising number of local residents are leaving their cars unlocked at night, leading to a high auto burglary rate.

Officer Dan Long says computers, cash and especially guns are often left overnight in plain sight in unlocked vehicles. He says in many cases the thefts are crimes of opportunity, with the thief taking the items simply because it's easy rather than because they planned to steal something.

Long says guns are especially prized targets and should never be left overnight in your car.

He also says you shouldn't leave your car unlocked and adds it's never a good idea to leave valuables out in plain sight in an unattended vehicle, even for short periods.
