In the wake of this month's deadly church shooting in Texas, Cheyenne police will be holding a workshop to help churches be prepared in case they face an active shooter situation.

Officer Kevin Malatesta says the workshop -- which will be led by Detective Jim Harper -- will help places of worship create security plans to keep their congregations safe.

"Obviously this would be a worst case scenario if anything like this happened, but if people are prepared and have an idea of how they would react or how they could react in such a situation it could help to minimize injuries (and) save people's lives," said Malatesta.

"And it's not just churches that people should have this mindset for being prepared in," he added. "These things are happening with some frequency and so it's a good idea to think through those eventualities."

The workshop will be held at the Cheyenne Public Safety Center on Dec. 6 from 6-8 p.m.
