There seems to be much controversy surrounding the old Cheyenne Police Department downtown. Residents were asked what they thought, and here's what they said.

"To sell? or "Not to sell?' That seems to be the big question these days in reference to the old Cheyenne Police Department building on Capital Avenue.

Originally, the city told the Catholic Diocese that could purchase the building, after the church gave the city an offer of $1,090,000. But the brakes were applied to that ideas at a recent city council meeting.

Some residents think that the council should follow through on the original deal, while other think that it should be put to an open bid.

We recently conducted an unscientific poll of our listeners, and this is what they thought about the matter at hand.

  • 54% thought that the selling of the property of the old CPD building should be and open bid process. This thought comes from the possibility of the city receiving more money that what was offered from the Diocese.
  • 46% thought that the city should follow through with their original commitment to the Catholic Diocese.

Some of the added comments from our listeners, as to why they voted the way they did, were valid and interesting. Some thought the city should sell now because the church wants to occupy the building for offices.

Some of the comments related to the city receiving more money through an open bid.

Some of the residents are afraid of someone buying the building and using it as a tax write off, with no intention of actually occupying the building, thus leaving another empty building downtown.
