City Says Holliday Park Goose Population Declining

Doug Randall/Townsquare Media

City of Cheyenne Assistant Parks and Recreation Director Todd Feezer says a ban on feeding ducks and geese on city property is helping to reduce an overpopulation of the birds in Holliday Park.

In 2012 the Cheyenne City Council approved a resolution originally proposed by Feezer to ban feeding the birds on city property. Supporters of the resolution said the birds were creating health and sanitation issues by leaving large amounts of feces in the park. There had also been reports of geese threatening park visitors by hissing at them.

Feezer says the feeding ban, as well as an egg addling program, has helped reduce the numbers of geese in the park. But since Canada geese commonly live 40 years or more, it may be quite some time before the population of the birds in the park shows a serious decline.
