From the hard court to the football field, Wyoming freshman Austin Conway is switching his Cowboy uniform this summer.

In a joint release from University of Wyoming head football coach Craig Bohl and head basketball coach Allen Edwards, it was announced Tuesday that Conway will become a full-time member of the Cowboy football team. The official swap will take place this summer, and he’ll no longer play basketball at UW.

Conway just finished a try-out with football during spring practice that concluded 12 days ago. He'll play wide receiver and be utilized as a kick returner, as well.

In a release from UW, the freshman said he visited with both head coaches after spring football ended.

“Both coaches were very supportive. The biggest thing was I just had to follow my heart. I felt really comfortable being back out on the football field this spring. It felt like I was at home back on the field.”

Coach Bohl said, “Austin (Conway) showed us during spring football that he has a passion for the game of football and that he had the skills to benefit our team moving forward.”

Conway’s scholarship will be shifted from basketball to football at the start of the summer. Cowboy football had a scholarship available from their 2016 recruiting period. This also means a second scholarship opens up for the Cowboy basketball program.

A 2015 graduate of Overland High School in Aurora, CO, Conway was a standout in both sports. After his senior season on the gridiron in 2014, he was selected to the Denver Post’s All-Colorado team for all classifications. He accounted for 1,850 yards of total offense and 18 touchdowns rushing and passing in 2014. Conway had 2,977 yards of total offense in 2013 and combined for 31 TD’s. He also led the Trailblazers on the basketball court to their first state championship as a senior in 2015 after a final four appearance as a junior.

The last Wyoming student-athlete to switch from basketball to football was Scottie Vines. He played for the Pokes on the gridiron in 2001 and 2002. He went on to have a brief career in the NFL with the Detroit Lions from 2004 through 2006 according to NFL.com.
