Game and Fish to Monitor Wolves

Beginning this fall, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department will monitor wolf populations by capturing and radio-collaring wolves in areas of  Wyoming where wolves are designated as trophy game animals. Game and Fish spokesman Al Langston says currently, radio collars are and will remain the primary means the department uses to collect this important data that helps us determine population size and distribution needed to manage wolves. Wyoming's first wolf hunt is scheduled to begin on October 1st. Langston says in order to maintain a recovered wolf population and keep the wolf off of the Endangered Species List, Wyoming must maintain at least 100 individual wolves and ten breeding pairs on lands outside of Yellowstone National Park and the Wind River Reservation.
