The Wyoming Game and Fish Department says antelope and deer sightings do not need to be reported – particularly to the Cheyenne Police Department or other city or county departments.

Recent case in point is an antelope or pronghorn that has been residing at Holiday Park on East Lincolnway since last week. Although all with good intentions, city and county departments have received more than 100 calls about the animal. Laramie County Game Warden Shawn Blajszczak says while a pronghorn in town is a fairly unusual sight, unless the animal is injured, there is little if anything we can do about it.

He says over the years game wardens have learned the lesson in Wyoming cities that trying to “herd” or “drive” a pronghorn or deer out of town rarely works and generally makes the situation worse by increasing the chance of a vehicle collision and possible human injury. The same is also true for attempting to tranquilize the animal in an urban area.

He adds that with the severely dry spring, Cheyenne residents could see more pronghorn in town than past years, because the animals will be increasingly drawn to the irrigated grass and shrubs. He says you should call the Game and Fish Department if you see a pronghorn or deer being injured from a vehicle collision or other circumstances.

During business hours, call the Game and Fish at 777-4600 and evenings and weekends call the state law enforcement dispatch center at 777-4338.
