Hundreds March for Equality, Memory of King

Several hundred people, including Governor Matt Mead, Secretary of State Max Maxfield  Cheyenne Mayor Rick Kaysen and Laramie County Commissioner M. Lee Hassenour joined a march through downtown Cheyenne Monday in memory of slain civil right leader Martin Luther King Jr as Wyoming's  capital city observed Martin Luther King Jr.-Wyoming Equality Day.

Maxfield said one of the main points he wanted people to leave with was that while racism may not be as openly expressed as was the case during King's lifetime, it still exists. He added that it isn't limited to the South either. Cheyenne Mayor Rick Kaysen said one of Martin Luther King's recurrent themes was the importance of community, a message the mayor says has as much importance today as it did half a century ago.

Hassenour called King "a great man" and said it was a blessing to take part in the march and the commemoration ceremonies  on the steps of the state capital building following the march.
