Hear Iron Maiden’s ‘Run to the Hills’ Done Yacht Rock Style

We all know Iron Maiden‘s ‘Run to the Hills’ is a metal classic. But what if you smoothed it out and dropped some Michael McDonald vocals on top?

We’ll probably never really know the answer to that question, sadly, but we just got pretty close, thanks to the wicked geniuses in the Guilty Pleasures. The self-described “smoothest rock band around” added the song to its set list during a recent show at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, taking one more giant step in its quest to deliver “the ultimate Yacht Rock experience” by having guest vocalist Michael “Mick” Donald put a soulful spin on an early Maiden hit.

Originally released in 1982, ‘Run to the Hills’ served as the lead single from the band’s ‘The Number of the Beast’ LP, and although it failed to make much of a dent on the U.S. charts, it broke the Top 10 in England — and then did it again in 1985, 1990 and 2002. Covered often, the song’s been performed by everyone from Dream Theater to ‘Swedish Idol’ contestant Erik Gronwall, but it’s never been heard quite like this.

It probably goes without saying that the Guilty Pleasures’ version of ‘Run to the Hills’ might not be to Maiden fans’ liking; still, it’s hard to argue that the song holds up surprisingly well in a yacht rock setting, and further underscores our belief that just about anything sounds great when Michael McDonald is singing it.
