Cheyenne City Councilman Jim Brown says his extensive experience in city government and private business make him the best candidate for Mayor of Cheyenne in 2016.

Brown has been a member of the Cheyenne City Council since 2007 and has chaired the council Finance Committee for seven years. He's also a member of the City/County Health Board, the Economic Joint Powers Board, the GIS Executive Committee and the Investment Fund Committee.

Among his other actions on the city council, Brown was instrumental in passing a city ordinance prohibiting motorists from talking on a cell phone while driving (except for a hands-free phone) and devising a monthly budget re-appropriation rather than the previous quarterly re-appropriation.

"Once you've been there nine years you've seen the good, the bad and the ugly of the city," he says of his council experience.

He says that background gives him a good idea of what is working, what isn't and what needs to be changed.

Brown says one of his priorities if elected would be the expansion of the Happy Jack Landfill, which he says will save the city millions of dollars in "tipping fees" over the next 30 years or so.

Brown says the 8 percent trash fee increase over five years approved by the city council this week won't be enough to cover the entire cost of the expansion project, so additional money will be needed at some point.

Brown joins eight candidates who have officially filed for mayor, along with City Councilman Richard Johnson, who says he is running for mayor as a write-in candidate.
