A 24 year old Kalamazoo, Michigan man was killed Tuesday night when the Chevy Tahoe pickup he was riding in struck a tractor trailer in the emergency lane of Interstate 80 just east of Cheyenne.

According to Wyoming Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Steve Townsend a 2009 Volvo Tractor Trailer driven by 30 year old Jitender Sharma of  Ontario, Canada had pulled into the emergency lane of the eastbound lane of Interstate 80 4 miles east of Cheyenne shortly before  8;30 pm.

Townsend says a pickup driven by 23 year old Robert Sucik was in the driving lane and drifted to the right, striking the left rear of the parked semi. The impact caused the vehicles to lock together and move a short distance. A passenger in the pickup, 24year old David Gumbleton, was declared dead at the scene after being extricated from the vehicle.

Sucik was transported to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center. Neither Sharma, nor his passenger, 46 year old Harwinder Judge, also of Ontario, was seriously injured in the crash. Townsend says the extrication, as well as the crash investigation and removal of the wreckage resulted in the closure of the eastbound lane of I-80 for about six hours.

Townsend says driver fatigue is being investigated as a factor in the accident.
