This week, legendary Who singer Roger Daltrey made headlines when he scolded a fan for smoking weed during a concert and threatened to walk off stage. Over the years, I've heard several fans complain about marijuana smoke at concerts, but never from the singer of the band.

Honestly, I can't remember a rock concert where I didn't see someone toking up or, at least, smell weed in the air. And I've been to a few shows that felt like I was trapped inside the world's largest bong. From what I can recollect, and the details for some of these shows might be a little fuzzy, here's the five concerts I've seen with the most pot in the crowd.

1. Pink Floyd at Mile High Stadium in Denver 1994 - Of the 80,000 fans in attendance, the vast majority of them were a mile high in more ways than one. Not only were most fans either drunk or stoned, a lot of them were tripping too. I vividly remember an older gentlemen behind us scolding someone nearby for smoking pot. The pothead replied, "Dude, this a Pink Floyd show, chill out."

2. Phish at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Denver (every Labor Day weekend) - I never had the chance to see the Grateful Dead, but I can only imagine it was probably a lot like the annual Phish concerts on Labor Day weekend in Denver. Like the Dead, there is a traveling community of Phish fans who turn the stadium grounds into a counter culture commune. I've never seen so many people wearing sunglasses at night...or white guys try to dance in Teva sandals.

3. Tom Petty at Fiddler's Green in Denver in 1995 - I don't remember the specific date, but it was the night that Jerry Garcia died and there was a torrential downpour. Instead of running for cover, you started to see wafts of smoke billowing from underneath umbrellas all over the amphitheater. In my section, I lost count of the number of joints that were being passed around.

4. Jamaican Me Crazy Reggae Festival in California - I've been to a few reggae festivals over the years and they're all basically big stoner parties. With all due respect to the Reggae on the Rocks festival at Red Rocks in Denver, you can't play hackey sack inside a steep red rock canyon. I once attended a reggae festival in California called Jamaican Crazy that more than lived up to its name. It was one of the few times I've ever seen the performers actually lighting up on stage.

5. Metallica in the 90's - I saw Metallica a few times in the 90's and their concerts always reminded me of a crazy high school keg party. Lots of dudes in black t-shirts getting hammered and high. Those shows had a completely different vibe than the other concerts on my list. These headbangers weren't passing around doobies, they were toking swag out of a beer can and then crushing it on their forehead.
