In a recent interview with the Associated Press, Paul McCartney revealed that he tried to pen new songs about the police shootings of Michael Brown and Eric Garner in Ferguson, Mo. and New York City, respectively.

“I was thinking recently about all these protests in New York and around the country,” McCartney said. “I thought it would be great to put something down about that, just to add my voice to the thousands of people walking in the streets.”

“I thought it through, and it just didn’t come easily,” he continued. “I’m not giving up on it, but it didn’t come easily, whereas some other emotions my come easily to me.”

It wouldn’t be the first time McCartney wrote a social justice-oriented song about current events. The iconic singer wrote the Beatles’ ‘Blackbird’ about the ‘60s Civil Rights Movement.

More recently, McCartney took on a whole different kind of narrative in the name of songwriting: video games. The former Beatle was commissioned to write a song for the PlayStation and Xbox game, ‘Destiny.’

“I thought, ‘Seeing it’s a shoot-‘em-up game, I will be the optimistic hope for the future,’” he said. “I will write something that sums up that side of the game.”

Fittingly titled ‘Hope for the Future,’ McCartney’s new song acts as the game’s closing track.
