The Replacements will reunite for Riot Fest shows in Toronto (Aug. 24-25), Chicago (Sept. 13-15) and Denver (Sept. 21-22), according to a press release that’s sure to have fans of the legendary Minneapolis punk band scrambling to make summer travel plans. The group hasn’t performed live in 22 years, but according to bassist Tommy Stinson, they never actually broke up. Last fall, Stinson and frontman Paul Westerberg reconvened in the studio for ‘Songs for Slim,’ an EP recorded to raise money for former Replacements guitarist Slim Dunlap, who suffered a stroke in 2012, and the old chemistry was apparently still there.

The reunited Replacements join a Riot Fest 2013 lineup heavy on classic punk bands. Among the acts joining Westerberg and Stinson in Chicago — where, fittingly enough, they played their last gig back in 1991 — are Rancid, Rocket from the Crypt, Blondie, Iggy and the Stooges, Fall Out Boy, Motorhead and Blink-182.

Billed as a “punk rock state fair,” Riot Fest’s Chicago weekend goes down at Humboldt Park and is due to feature a Ferris wheel, fire eaters and a tilt-a-whirl, in addition to other carnival attractions. Of course, the real draw will be the Replacements, the wildly influential, maddeningly self-sabotaging foursome behind some of the best-loved American punk albums of the ’80s.

Visit the Riot Fest website for a full list of performers, and ‘Mats fans, put in for those days now. (And if for some reason you’re not up on the band, click here to read our Instant Expert feature.)
