Traffic signal changes are being made to address safety concerns at the busiest intersection in Cheyenne.

Beginning Monday, motorists traveling on Dell Range Boulevard between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. will only be able to turn left onto Converse Avenue with a designated green arrow.

"It's become harder and harder for motorists to find a gap in oncoming traffic to make that turn," said City Engineer John Hall. "That's led to a high number of crashes."

Hall says there were 97 left turn crashes at the intersection between 2005 and 2014, 36 of which occurred during peak evening hours.

"We were seeing more than a third of our crashes concentrated just in that 3 1/2 hour period," said Hall. "That stood out as a significant spike in a period of time where we could make some signal phasing and timing changes and hopefully have a positive impact and increase safety."

Hall says the intersection, which sees 30,107 vehicles a day, frequently tops the list in terms of crashes statewide.

"We know this is probably the number one safety hot spot in town and so we're doing something about it," said Hall.
