What are your fondest memories of Okie Blanchard Stadium?
The 55-year-old structure on East Pershing Boulevard in Cheyenne will be replaced next summer by a $14 million stadium being built next to it.
The East High Thunderbirds will host the Gillette Camels in the final regular season game at the stadium on Friday, October 25, at 7 p.m.
The current stadium was built in 1958 at a cost of $190,000 and was named Memorial Stadium. In the early 1970’s the name was changed to Okie Blanchard in honor of the coach who had won more than 700 basketball games and nearly 150 football games while at Cheyenne High School. He also coached in Hillsdale, Casper, Glenrock and Rock Springs.
East and Central High Schools shared Okie Blanchard Stadium until Riske Field was built in 2001. On the hill just west of the stadium you’ll find a big blue E. There also used to be a large red concrete C built into the slope and the rivals would paint each other’s letters in their school colors.
To the west of the current stadium, you can see the state-of-the-art artificial playing surface for the new complex being built complete with an East T-Bird’s logo at midfield.
Get out to Okie Blanchard Stadium this Friday, October 25, 2013 starting at 7 p.m. to see one of the last football games to be played on the grass of Joe Farrelli Field.
