Expert Says New iPhone Fingerprint Scanner Won’t Stop Thieves — They’ll Will Just Chop Off Your Finger, Too

iPhone 5S fingerprint scannerOn Tuesday, Apple unveiled the newest iPhone, and the biggest new feature is a built-in fingerprint scanner.  It only unlocks your phone when it detects your fingerprint touching the button.

That should be a great anti-theft move, right?  Nope.  Now, robbers will steal your iPhone . . . and chop off your finger.

Marc Rogers is the head of a mobile security company called Lookout. He says they’ve seen criminals in the past who’ve cut off victims’ fingers to get past fingerprint scanners.

It’s never been that widespread because very few people have used fingerprint security in the past.  But that’s going to change once millions of people have new iPhones, and suddenly, everyone’s using their fingerprint for security.

Rogers says, quote, “Thieves in some regions have worked out that you can force a victim to unlock a secured device and, in some extreme cases, have also mutilated victims in order to steal their fingerprints.”

Realistically, there’s a tiny chance that this is going to happen to you.  But it’s not a zero percent chance.  Enjoy your new iPhone!
