For the first time this season the Wyoming Cowboys have a Mountain West Player of the Week. Andrew Wingard won Defensive Player of the Week honors Monday.

Wingard had nine total tackles in the Cowboys overtime victory over Hawaii last Saturday night. Six of those were solo tackles. He also added one tackle for loss.

Wingard also finished with an interception and two pass break-ups. His interception midway through the third quarter at the Wyoming two-yard line thwarted a potential Hawaii scoring drive. He returned it 22 yards.

The junior safety talked after the win last Saturday night about guys stepping up in different situations and different roles.

This was Wingard’s first MW Defensive Player of the Week award this season and second of his career.

This week’s Offensive Player of the Week is San Diego State senior running back Rashad Penny, who won it for the fourth week in a row. Special Teams Player of the Week honors went to New Mexico senior kicker Jason Sanders.
